After our drawing unit, students created a unique visual representation of a band or musician of their choice. They were to create it in the style of the artist Peter Max, who has been making bright, colorful paintings since the 60's. Below are some of his paintings. After choosing a band or musician to represent, we drew our sketches and then put our drawing onto the final paper. Students learned how to blend colors and create value to add to the colorful style of Peter Max. These are the ones that I chose to be laminated and displayed in the hallway! Everyone did a great job! For our portfolio project, we used multiple different media (or materials) to create an abstract design that included our names. We used crayons and rubber cement (glue) as a resist, which is something that repels water. When we painted over the crayon and glue with watercolors, it left the glue and crayon designs unpainted. It created a neat design on our folders! In Art, portfolio's are used to hold all the artwork we create. It helps to keep us organized and we can see how much we have learned and accomplished! Below are the ones that I chose to be shown on the website! Scroll through to see if yours was one of them! Right now we are working on our Drawing Unit. Our objective is to learn different drawing techniques and exercises to advance our drawing skills. The different exercises are: Observational, Contour, Blind Contour, Gesture, Upside-down, Gridded, Value, and Shading.
Below you can find our Drawing Packet that we are using for the Unit. Make sure to STUDY!! Test is FRIDAY!! We will review on Thursday
Students learned about all of the 7 Elements and how to represent them visually. In their artwork they showed the Element, creative examples, and definition. I chose the top 30 most creative and neatly designed projects to be laminated and put up on the bullentin board outside the art room. Congrats to those who made the top 30! top 30!CLICK ON PICTURE TO ENLARGE IT The rest of the art projects are also hanging up in the hall and in the art classroom - good job everyone!! Right now, we are learning about the Elements of Art. Below are the 7 Elements that we use in art everyday:
**Elements of Art - the basic visual symbols an artist uses to create works of art 1. Line - the path of a dot through space 2. Shape - an area clearly set off by one or more of the elemtns of art 3. Color - what the eye sees when light is reflected off an object 4. Form - an element of art that refers to an object with three dimensions 5. Space - the distance or area between, around, above, below and within things ** 6 different ways to show space in drawing: Size, Overlapping, Placement, Color/intensity, Perspective, Detail 6. Texture - how something feels or looks like it might feel 7. Value - the lightness or darkness of a color Bring in magazines for our sketchbook cover collage!
We will start working on our sketchbook TOMORROW, Wednesdsay, so have your supplies by tomorrow!! I am so excited you are in my class! To the right you can check out important papers for this class and you can see what projects we have done in the past Visual Arts Exploratory classes. I change our projects up all the time, so we will probably be doing a lot of fun different stuff! Hope you will enjoy this class and that you will learn a lot! Don't forget to get your materials for this class! They are important to have with you everyday.
1. A pack of #2 pencils (may be stored on assigned shelf) – a pencil will be needed for every day. 2. A Folder with 3 brads (or prongs) and pockets to hold paper- we will make this into our sketchbook (this may also be stored on assigned shelf) – needed for every day. I will provide the paper. 3. A ruler (wooden, plastic, whatever works for you) 4. Fine point and Ultra Fine Point BLACK Sharpie or Permanent Marker 5. Big eraser (pink pearl or something like it) 6. Pencil pouch to store materials in For this project, students chose an animal that they felt represented their 'spirit animal'. Students learned how to use the oil pastels in different ways and how to make their animals with arbitrary colors. Arbitrary colors are colors that are 'non-realistic'. So, if you wanted to make your cat blue, make the cat blue! :) I love how these animals have so much expression through the use of color. They turned out great! Here are some that were chosen to hang in the hallway.

Visual Arts exPLORATORY
We explore many different materials and art tools and techniques such as painting, printmaking, mixed media, clay, and drawing. Students learn the basic Elements of Art and Principles of Design and how to apply them to create their own original artwork.
