After finishing the portrait packet, students took their selfies or used a picture that they already had. They learned how to re-size the picture in order to make it a size to easily grid. It is always important to know the size that you want to make your drawing in order to know what size to make your photograph. I always find the size of the drawing and then divide it by 2. For an example, our drawing was going to be 12"x 12", so our photograph needed to be 6"x 6". Gridding is great, because you can correctly draw anything you want! It helps to break the picture down so that you can focus on sections at a time. It also helps with drawing proportions correctly.
Before shading the final selfie, drawing students had to draw and shade a 7 step value scale in order to practice skills that they might now have done in while. A value scale shows the steps from dark to light just like you see the one being worked on below. Using drawing pencils (HB- lightest value, 6B- darker values) helps to easily create these different shades.
