Dear Parents and Students,
I am really excited about this year’s Art Club here at Wakefield Middle! This year we will have art club meetings to do many different fun activities, both inside the art classroom and for the school community. In the past we have been asked to do visual art for the school including: The Veteran Wall, a beach mural in the teachers’ lounge, a banner for Special Olympics, A/B honor roll displays, sets for theater productions, and many more. Doing this allows the school to see what talent our student artists have here at Wakefield Middle. As the school year rolls out, we will have projects that we might do for the school community, but I will also be teaching certain lessons to art club members during our meetings. Some meetings also might be just a time where art club members can draw and create their own ideas.
During our interest meeting, I will be giving out an application that every student interested will need to fill out and turn in. These applications can be taken home and brought in no later than Monday Sept 12th. Along with the application, students interested will need to bring in one of their own original artwork (artwork will be given back).
Selecting the members of the Art club is always a difficult decision, because the Art club can have only a certain number of members. This is due to the number of materials, open table space, and limited seating in the art classroom. In the past, many students have signed up and some have not been able to be selected. I will be selecting students according to their completion and effort on the application, effort on the students’ sample work, and if possible, prior knowledge of behavior in school. Application must also be turned in on time! Students not chosen will have a second chance to join the art club. I put students who were not selected for the Art club on a ‘waiting list’ so anytime an Art club member is asked to leave or resigns from the club, I will notify the student next on the list to see if he or she would like to join. Being asked to the leave the art club might be due to improper use of materials, not helping clean, wasting materials, behavior issues during meetings, not attending meetings regularly, or not doing work/goofing off during meetings. I will expect the best behavior out of those selected for Art club and to use meeting times wisely.
The Art club meetings will be (almost) every other Thursday from 3:30-4:45 in the art room (some fall on holidays). See dates below for scheduled meetings:
